Abstract:   (217 Views)
Background & Aims: Breast cancer, as one of the most common types of cancer, remains a significant threat to women's health worldwide. Due to the high incidence of side effects associated with chemotherapy, the search for natural compounds with anticancer properties and fewer side effects is of great importance. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Piper cubeba L. on breast cancer cells.
Materials & Methods: In this study, MCF-7 cancer cells were exposed to different concentrations of the hydroalcoholic extract of Piper cubeba L. Subsequently, cell viability was measured using the MTT assay. Additionally, morphological changes in cells and the occurrence of apoptosis were investigated using Giemsa staining and ethidium bromide-acridine orange staining methods.
Results: The results showed that the extract, in a concentration-dependent manner, reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cancer cells. A concentration of 1 mg/mL was determined as the IC50 of the extract in this study. Moreover, the observation of distinct morphological changes in cells treated with the extract indicated the induction of apoptotic cell death.
Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that the hydroalcoholic extract of Piper cubeba L. has significant cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. These findings indicate the strong potential of this plant as a natural source for the development of new anticancer drugs.
