Abstract:   (17107 Views)

Background & Aims: Nowadays 10-15% of couples are infertile. One of effective methods in treatment of infertile couples is intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), however, spontaneous abortion rate increases in ICSI pregnancies. This study aimed to measure potential risk factors for spontaneous abortion such as maternal age, infertility factors, number of embryo transfer, and multiple pregnancies.

Materials & Methods: This descriptive-analytical study covered all pregnant women (as a result of ICSI) of Kosar infertility center in Motahary teaching hospital between 2003 and 2007. Data were collected through recorded documents of patients in IVF ward and then analyzed using SPSS software, Chai-square, T test, and fisher test. P value was significant. (P<0.05)

Results: In the present study, 224 out of 280 patients who had become pregnant through ICSI were included. The incidence rate of abortion was 30.1%. There was a significant difference between aborted and non aborted cases (p=0.034). There was also no significant difference between cause of infertility and abortion (p=0.22) and between abortion and number of transferred fetuses.(p=0.94) and between abortion and multiple pregnancy(p=0.17). The incidence of abortion was higher in ovulation problems rather than other causes.

Conclusion: In this study, the higher was the age of mother the higher was the incidence of abortion. There was no correlation between abortion and number of embryos transferred or multiple pregnancies.
